What image formats can I compress?
PDFLocal's image compressor supports JPG/JPEG, PNG, and WebP formats for input. The output format depends on the input: JPG images are re-encoded as JPG with your chosen quality setting (JPEG compression). PNG images can be compressed as PNG (lossless optimization, more modest reduction) or converted to JPG (lossy, much larger reduction but loses transparency). WebP images are handled via the browser's native Canvas API and can be output as WebP or JPG. GIF animation files are not supported for compression in the current version.
How much can image compression reduce file size?
The reduction varies dramatically by image content and original compression: A high-resolution photograph taken with a professional camera might be 8-15MB and compresses to under 1MB at medium quality settings. A screenshot or graphic with large flat color areas compresses very efficiently. Already heavily compressed images (like thumbnails or low-quality JPGs) gain little from further compression and may not reduce significantly. PNG files with transparency layers compress well when converted to JPG if transparency is not needed. Typical reduction ranges: Photos: 60-85% size reduction at medium quality. Graphics/screenshots: 30-60% reduction. Already compressed images: 5-20% reduction.
Will compressing my images affect their visual quality?
JPEG compression is inherently lossy β some image detail is permanently removed. At quality settings of 75-85%, the visual difference from the original is minimal and essentially invisible to the naked eye in normal viewing conditions. At quality 50-60%, slight "JPEG artifacts" (blurring of fine detail, blockiness in areas of smooth color gradient, halos around high-contrast edges) may become visible when viewed at 100% zoom. At quality below 40%, artifacts are typically visible even at normal viewing sizes. The image compressor shows you a before/after comparison so you can evaluate whether the quality tradeoff is acceptable for your use case before downloading.
Is there a file size or dimension limit for image compression?
There is no enforced file size or dimension limit in PDFLocal's image compressor. The tool has been tested with images up to 50 megapixels (e.g., 8000x6000 pixel) and 25MB source files. Very large images may take 5-15 seconds to process as the browser's Canvas API renders them into memory. Images with dimensions larger than approximately 16384x16384 pixels may hit browser Canvas size limits on some devices β this affects very few real-world images. For most photography and graphic design use cases (under 24MP), processing is fast and reliable.
